WILDLIFE

Informative poster about raccoons highlighting their intelligence and impact.

RACCOONS

Raccoons are highly adaptable mammals recognized by their black facial mask and ringed tail. They are primarily nocturnal and are known for their intelligence and dexterous front paws, which allow them to open containers and access food sources. Raccoons often seek shelter in attics, crawl spaces, chimneys, and outbuildings. They are omnivores that feed on fruits, insects, pet food, garbage, and small animals. Signs of raccoon activity include overturned trash cans, tracks, noises in attics, and damage to roofs or vents. While generally not aggressive, raccoons can carry diseases and cause significant property damage when they take up residence near homes.

SKUNKS

Skunks are nocturnal mammals best known for their black fur, distinctive white stripes, and powerful defensive spray. They are generally shy, non-aggressive animals that prefer to avoid people and spend most of their time searching for insects, grubs, rodents, fruits, and other food sources. Skunks often live under decks, sheds, porches, and other sheltered areas. Common signs of skunk activity include small cone-shaped holes in lawns, burrow entrances, tracks, and strong musky odors. While skunks can become a nuisance around homes, they also provide benefits by helping control insect and rodent populations.

Opossums, North America's gentle marsupials, help control pests and maintain environmental health.

Opossums

Opossums are North America's only marsupials and are easily recognized by their white face, pointed snout, gray fur, and long hairless tail. These nocturnal animals are generally non-aggressive and play an important role in the ecosystem by feeding on insects, ticks, rodents, carrion, and other pests. Opossums often seek shelter under decks, sheds, crawl spaces, and occasionally in attics. Signs of opossum activity include tracks with five toes, overturned trash, droppings, and nighttime noises. While they can become a nuisance around homes, opossums are beneficial wildlife that help reduce pest populations and clean up organic waste.

ARMADILLOS

Armadillos are armored mammals recognized by their hard protective shell, long snout, and strong digging claws. They are primarily nocturnal and spend much of their time searching for insects, grubs, worms, and other invertebrates in the soil. Armadillos can cause significant damage to lawns, flower beds, gardens, and landscaping by digging numerous small holes while foraging for food. They often create burrows under decks, sheds, foundations, and other structures. Common signs of armadillo activity include cone-shaped holes in the yard, disturbed soil, burrow entrances, and tracks. While generally harmless to people, armadillos can become a nuisance when their digging damages property.

SQUIRRELS

Squirrels are agile rodents commonly found in trees, neighborhoods, and around homes. They are recognized by their bushy tails, sharp claws, and strong front teeth that continuously grow throughout their lives. Squirrels are active during the day and feed on nuts, seeds, fruits, and other plant materials. While they are an important part of the ecosystem, squirrels can become a nuisance when they enter attics, chimneys, or wall voids. Common signs of squirrel activity include scratching noises, chewing damage, nests, droppings, and entry holes around roofs or soffits. Their chewing can damage wood, insulation, and electrical wiring, creating both property damage and potential fire hazards.
