VENOMOUS SNAKES
Copperhead
Identification: Tan to light brown body with distinctive hourglass-shaped bands across the back.
Description: Copperheads are the most commonly encountered venomous snake in Oklahoma. Their excellent camouflage allows them to blend into leaves, brush, and wooded areas. While their bite is rarely fatal, it requires immediate medical attention.
Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin)
Identification: Thick-bodied snake with a dark brown, olive, or black appearance and a blocky head.
Description: Cottonmouths are found primarily near water in eastern Oklahoma. When threatened, they may open their mouths wide to display the bright white interior that gives them their name. They are venomous and should be avoided.
Prairie Rattlesnake
Identification: Light tan to brown body with darker blotches and a rattle on the tail.
Description: Prairie Rattlesnakes are found mainly in western Oklahoma's grasslands and prairies. They use their rattles as a warning when disturbed and feed on rodents and other small animals.
Timber Rattlesnake
Identification: Large, heavy-bodied snake with dark V-shaped crossbands on a gray, tan, or yellow background.
Description: Timber Rattlesnakes are primarily found in eastern Oklahoma's forests and rocky hillsides. They are generally shy and prefer to avoid people but will defend themselves if threatened.
Western Diamondback Rattlesnake
Identification: Heavy-bodied snake with diamond-shaped markings along its back and a black-and-white banded tail.
Description: The Western Diamondback is Oklahoma's most recognized venomous snake. It is found throughout much of the state and is responsible for most rattlesnake encounters. This species relies on its rattle as a warning before striking.
